Rapist jailed for ‘sadistic and degrading’ attack on escort more than 20 years ago

A 51-YEAR-OLD who handcuffed an escort and repeatedly raped her has been sentenced to six years and nine months in jail more than 20 years later.

Karl Boyd Bryhn, from Adelaide, lured the sex worker to a house in Perth and put a pillowcase over her head in what the judge called a “sadistic and degrading” attack.

He had called her escort service and booked an appointment, leaving the front door open and the shower running to get her to step inside. He then attacked her from behind, threatened her and repeatedly raped her, leaving her bound and hooded until she managed to break free.

Bryhn was only caught when a cold case review of DNA evidence linked him to the crime, which took place in July 1994.

The court heard that Bryhn believed he would have been affected by drugs at the time but did not remember the events of that night.

Sentencing Bryhn at the West Australian District Court today, Judge Philip Eaton said: “Sex workers, like taxi drivers who work late into the night, are particularly vulnerable in their occupations, but they’re equally entitled to the protection of the law.”

Judge Eaton noted that Bryhn had a “chequered history” of offending in several states dating back to 1989 and a longstanding problem with drugs. He also observed that Bryhn had been abused as a child and accepted that he was remorseful.

Bryhn, who was extradited from Adelaide to face the charges, will be eligible for parole after serving four years and nine months behind bars.
